How to perform ghusl, step by step
Ghusl is the major ritual washing of the whole body. After certain states it is required before you may pray or touch the Quran again.

O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful

When is ghusl obligatory?
- after sexual intercourse and after ejaculation, also in sleep
- after menstruation and post-natal bleeding have ended
- for someone entering Islam (obligatory according to many scholars, recommended according to others)
- for the deceased, who are washed by others
What makes it valid
The intention, and water reaching the whole body, including the roots of the hair. In the Hanafi school rinsing the mouth and nose is also required. Whoever simply showers with this intention and rinses the mouth and nose has a valid ghusl.
The method according to the Sunnah
Aisha described how the Prophet ﷺ performed ghusl (al-Bukhari, Muslim):
- Make the intention and say Bismillah.
- Wash your hands, then clean the private parts.
- Perform wudu as for prayer.
- Pour water over your head three times so that it reaches the roots of the hair.
- Wash the whole body, the right side first, then the left.
Women do not need to undo braided hair for ghusl after impurity, as long as the water reaches the roots (Muslim).
When ghusl is recommended
- before the Jumu'ah prayer
- before the two Eid prayers
- before entering ihram for Hajj and umrah

Frequently asked questions
Does ghusl replace wudu?
Yes. After a complete ghusl you may pray without making a separate wudu, as long as nothing has broken it.
What if there is no water?
Then tayammum takes its place: wiping the face and hands with clean earth or dust (Quran 5:6). The same applies if water would harm your health.
