Fasting in Ramadan
Fasting Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Allah says: „O die ihr glaubt, vorgeschrieben ist euch das Fasten, so wie es denjenigen vor euch vorgeschrieben war, auf daß ihr gottesfürchtig werden möget“ (Koran 2:183, Übersetzung: Bubenheim/Elyas). The fast runs from dawn (Fajr, imsak) until sunset (Maghrib): no food, drink or marital relations. Suhoor is eaten before dawn and the fast is broken at iftar, by the Sunnah with dates or water.
