Miswak: a Sunnah for every prayer
The Prophet ﷺ loved the miswak so much that it was one of the last things he used before he passed away.
Were it not that it would be difficult for my nation, I would have commanded them to use the miswak at every prayer.
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
The miswak purifies the mouth and pleases the Lord.
an-Nasai, and al-Bukhari without a chain
When to use it
- Before every prayer and at wudu.
- When waking up, including at night (al-Bukhari, Muslim).
- When entering the house: it was the first thing the Prophet ﷺ did (Sahih Muslim).
- Before reading the Quran.
- When the smell of the mouth changes.
How to use it
Trim the bark off one end, soften the fibres with water and brush across the teeth from right to left. Cut off the used tip every few days. A miswak fits in a pocket or bag, which makes it easy to keep this Sunnah at work or university.
