Duha: the morning prayer that counts as charity
Salat ad-Duha is a short voluntary prayer in the morning. It takes five minutes and the Prophet ﷺ said it counts as charity for every joint of your body.
The virtue of Duha
In the morning, charity is due on every joint of each one of you. Every tasbih is charity, every tahmid is charity, every tahlil is charity, every takbir is charity, enjoining good is charity and forbidding evil is charity. And two rakats of Duha suffice for all of that.
Sahih Muslim
The Prophet ﷺ advised Abu Hurairah and Abu ad-Darda to keep praying Duha (al-Bukhari, Muslim).
When is Duha?
From about 15 to 20 minutes after sunrise until shortly before Dhuhr. The best time is when the sun is high and the day is getting hot. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The prayer of the oft-returning is when the young camels feel the heat" (Sahih Muslim).
How many rakats?
At least two. You can pray four, six, eight or more, in pairs.
How to make it a habit
- Attach it to your morning routine: after breakfast, before starting work or on your first break.
