Islamic condolence messages
When someone loses a loved one, a few sincere words and a dua mean a great deal. Here is what the Sunnah teaches and messages you can send.
What to say first
إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun
Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. (Quran 2:156)
The Prophet ﷺ consoled his daughter with these words (al-Bukhari, Muslim):
إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَا أَخَذَ، وَلَهُ مَا أَعْطَى، وَكُلُّ شَيْءٍ عِنْدَهُ بِأَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى، فَلْتَصْبِرْ وَلْتَحْتَسِبْ
Inna lillahi ma akhadh, wa lahu ma a'ta, wa kullu shay'in indahu bi-ajalin musamma, faltasbir waltahtasib
To Allah belongs what He took and to Him belongs what He gave, and everything with Him has an appointed time, so be patient and hope for reward.
Condolence messages
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun. May Allah forgive them, have mercy on them and grant you patience.
I am so sorry for your loss. May Allah make their grave a garden of Paradise and reunite you in Jannah.
May Allah grant your family sabr and reward you for every tear. I am here if you need anything.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun. May Allah expand their grave, fill it with light and admit them to al-Firdaws.
Thinking of you and making dua for your loved one. May Allah ease your pain.
Dua for the deceased
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ، وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ
Allahummaghfir lahu warhamhu, wa afihi wa'fu anhu
O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, give him well-being and pardon him. (Sahih Muslim; for a woman: laha, warhamha, wa afiha wa'fu anha)
Helping the family
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Prepare food for the family of Jafar, for something has come upon them that keeps them busy" (Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi). Bringing food and practical help is part of the Sunnah.
