Islamic phrases and their meanings
Arabic phrases Muslims use every day, with their meaning and when to say them.
السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ
Assalamu alaykum
Peace be upon you. The Islamic greeting. Reply: Wa alaykumus-salam.
بِسْمِ اللهِ
Bismillah
In the name of Allah. Before eating, drinking, starting work or any action.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ
Alhamdulillah
All praise is due to Allah. When something good happens, after sneezing, after eating and in every situation.
سُبْحَانَ اللهِ
SubhanAllah
Glory be to Allah. When amazed or seeing something beautiful in creation.
مَا شَاءَ اللهُ
Mashallah
What Allah has willed. When admiring something, to protect it from the evil eye.
إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ
Inshallah
If Allah wills. When speaking about the future (Quran 18:23-24).
اللهُ أَكْبَرُ
Allahu Akbar
Allah is the Greatest. In prayer, when climbing, at good news.
أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ
Astaghfirullah
I seek Allah's forgiveness. After a mistake, and as daily dhikr.
جَزَاكَ اللهُ خَيْرًا
JazakAllahu khayran
May Allah reward you with good. To thank someone. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever says it has praised fully (at-Tirmidhi). Reply: Wa iyyakum (and you too).
بَارَكَ اللهُ فِيكَ
Barakallahu feek
May Allah bless you. As thanks or congratulations.
يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ
Yarhamukallah
May Allah have mercy on you. To someone who sneezes and says Alhamdulillah. They reply: Yahdikumullahu wa yuslihu balakum (al-Bukhari).
إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun
We belong to Allah and to Him we return. At news of a death or any loss (Quran 2:156).
لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ
La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah
There is no power and no strength except with Allah. When facing difficulty. A treasure of Paradise (al-Bukhari, Muslim).
فِي أَمَانِ اللهِ
Fi amanillah
In Allah's protection. When saying goodbye.
