Dua for the sick and for healing
Illness is a test and, for the believer, an expiation of sins. The Prophet ﷺ taught supplications for the sick and visited them himself. Here are the most important ones.
وَإِذَا مَرِضۡتُ فَهُوَ يَشۡفِينِ ﴿٨٠﴾
Waitha maridtu fahuwa yashfeeni
And when I am ill, it is He who cures me
Quran 26:80 · Surah Ash-Shu'ara · Translation: Saheeh International · Transliteration: Tanzil.net
The dua of the Prophet ﷺ for the sick
Allahumma rabban-nas, adhhibil-ba's, ishfi antash-shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uk, shifa'an la yughadiru saqama
O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm and heal, You are the Healer. There is no healing but Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness behind.
The Prophet ﷺ said this when he visited a sick person, wiping over them with his right hand (al-Bukhari, Muslim).
Seven times for the sick
أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ رَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ أَنْ يَشْفِيَكَ
As'alullahal-'azima rabbal-'arshil-'azimi an yashfiyak
I ask Allah, the Magnificent, Lord of the magnificent Throne, to heal you.
Whoever visits a sick person whose time has not come and says this seven times, Allah will heal him (Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi).
For your own pain
Place your hand on the place that hurts, say Bismillah three times, then seven times:
أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ
A'udhu billahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhir
I seek refuge in Allah and His power from the evil of what I feel and fear.
Source: Sahih Muslim. The Prophet ﷺ also recited al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas over himself when ill (al-Bukhari); see ruqyah.
Visiting the sick
Whoever visits a sick person is in the harvest of Paradise until he returns.
Sahih Muslim
When visiting, say la ba'sa, tahurun in sha Allah: no harm, a purification, if Allah wills (al-Bukhari). Keep the visit short, bring good words, and ask the sick person to pray for you. Messages for those who cannot visit: get well soon messages.

Frequently asked questions
Does illness wipe out sins?
Yes. The Prophet ﷺ said that no fatigue, illness, worry, grief, harm or sadness afflicts a Muslim, not even a thorn that pricks him, except that Allah expiates some of his sins by it (al-Bukhari, Muslim).
Is seeing a doctor against trusting Allah?
No. The Prophet ﷺ said: seek treatment, for Allah has not sent down a disease without sending down its cure (Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi). Trust in Allah means using the means and relying on Him for the result.
