The Sunnah of eating: 10 etiquettes

Meals happen several times a day, so the etiquettes of eating are among the easiest Sunnahs to practise.

Say Bismillah, eat with your right hand and eat from what is in front of you.

Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

The son of Adam fills no vessel worse than his stomach. A few morsels are enough to keep his back straight. If he must, then a third for his food, a third for his drink and a third for his breath.

at-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah

10 etiquettes

  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Say Bismillah before eating. If you forget, say Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu (Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi).
  3. Eat and drink with your right hand.
  4. Eat from what is in front of you.
  5. Sit while eating and drinking.
  6. Do not criticise food: the Prophet ﷺ ate it if he liked it and left it if he did not (al-Bukhari, Muslim).
  7. Eat moderately, the one third rule.
  8. Eat together: gathering over food brings blessing (Abu Dawud).
  9. Lick your fingers and clean the plate before wiping your hands (Sahih Muslim).
  10. Say Alhamdulillah afterwards.

All duas for eating: dua for eating.
