Fasting the Day of Arafah and Ashura

Two single days in the year carry an extraordinary reward for fasting: the Day of Arafah and the Day of Ashura.

Fasting the Day of Arafah, I hope from Allah that it expiates the year before it and the year after it. And fasting the Day of Ashura, I hope from Allah that it expiates the year before it.

Sahih Muslim

The Day of Arafah

The 9th of Dhul-Hijjah, the day the pilgrims stand at Arafah. It is recommended for those who are not on Hajj. The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are the best days of the year for good deeds (al-Bukhari).

The Day of Ashura

The 10th of Muharram, the day Allah saved Musa and his people from Pharaoh. The Prophet ﷺ said: "If I live until next year, I will fast the ninth as well" (Sahih Muslim). So it is Sunnah to fast the 9th and 10th, or the 10th and 11th.

Never miss them

Both dates follow the Hijri calendar and move every year by about 11 days. Hadaff shows the Hijri date daily; set a reminder a few days before.
