Lowering the gaze in daily life
Allah commands both men and women to lower their gaze. In a world of screens and social media, it is a daily habit that protects the heart.
Qul lilmumineena yaghuddoo min absarihum wayahfathoo furoojahum thalika azka lahum inna Allaha khabeerun bima yasnaʿoona
Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do
Quran 24:30 · Surah An-Nur
The Prophet ﷺ said to Ali: O Ali, do not follow a glance with another glance. The first is for you, but the second is not.
Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi
Practical habits
- Curate your feed: unfollow accounts and mute content that you would not want to look at in front of Allah.
- Use filters on your browser and phone.
- Look away immediately from the first unintentional glance.
- Fill your time: idle scrolling is where most problems start. Replace it with Quran, dhikr or a podcast.
- Marriage: the Prophet ﷺ said marriage helps lower the gaze (al-Bukhari, Muslim).
- Fasting also helps, as mentioned in the same hadith.
- Repent quickly when you slip, and keep going.
