Fasting the white days (Ayyam al-Bid)
Fasting three days every month carries the reward of fasting the whole year. The Sunnah is to fast them on the 13th, 14th and 15th of the Hijri month, when the moon is full.
Fasting three days of every month is like fasting the whole year.
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
If you fast three days of a month, fast the 13th, 14th and 15th.
at-Tirmidhi and an-Nasai, narrated by Abu Dharr
They are called the white days because the nights are bright with the full moon. Each good deed is rewarded tenfold, so three days count as thirty: a whole month, every month.
How to remember them
- Follow the Hijri calendar. The Hadaff app shows the Hijri date and the moon phase every day.
- Set a reminder on the 12th of each Hijri month.
- If you miss them, fast any three days that month. The general reward of three days still applies.
The 13th of Dhul-Hijjah is a day of Eid (the days of tashriq) and must not be fasted. Fast other days that month instead.
