Fasting six days of Shawwal
After Ramadan, six more days of fasting in Shawwal complete the reward of a full year of fasting.
Whoever fasts Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted for a lifetime.
Sahih Muslim
Ramadan is like ten months (30 days times ten) and six days are like sixty days, two months: a full year.
Practical points
- They do not have to be consecutive. Any six days in Shawwal count, as long as they are not on the day of Eid.
- Make up missed Ramadan days first where possible, then the six days, according to many scholars.
- Spread them out: for example Mondays and Thursdays for three weeks.
- Track them in your habit tracker until you have six ticks.
