Fasting on Mondays and Thursdays
The Prophet ﷺ regularly fasted on Mondays and Thursdays. Starting with one day a week is a realistic habit for most people.
Why these days
Deeds are presented to Allah on Mondays and Thursdays, and I love that my deeds are presented while I am fasting.
Jami at-Tirmidhi
The Prophet ﷺ was asked about fasting on Monday. He said: That is the day on which I was born and the day on which revelation came to me.
Sahih Muslim
Whoever fasts one day for the sake of Allah, Allah will keep his face away from the Fire by seventy years.
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
Tips
- Start with Mondays only for a month.
- Eat suhoor. "Eat suhoor, for in suhoor there is blessing" (al-Bukhari, Muslim).
- Drink plenty of water in the evening and at suhoor.
- Plan light days: avoid heavy sport or long drives on fasting days at first.
- Break your fast promptly at Maghrib with dates or water and say the dua for breaking the fast.
- Track it so you notice when you have skipped a few weeks.
