Learn Quranic Arabic, 15 minutes a day

Allah revealed the Quran in Arabic so that we understand it. You do not need years of study to start understanding what you recite in every prayer.

إِنَّآ أَنزَلۡنَٰهُ قُرۡءَٰنًا عَرَبِيّٗا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ﴿٢﴾

Inna anzalnahu quranan ʿarabiyyan laʿallakum taʿqiloona

Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an that you might understand

Quran 12:2 · Surah Yusuf

Why it is easier than you think

small number of words make up a large part of the Quran. Words like Allah, rabb (Lord), qala (he said), kana (he was) and amana (he believed) appear hundreds of times. Learning the most frequent few hundred words lets you recognise a large share of what you read.

A daily plan

  1. Start with what you recite in salah: al-Fatiha, the short surahs and the adhkar of the prayer. Learn them word by word.
  2. Learn five new words a day from a list of the most frequent Quranic words.
  3. Learn basic patterns: pronouns, past and present verbs, and common prepositions.
  4. Read a word-by-word translation of the surah you are reading.
  5. Review on your phone while waiting, commuting or before sleeping.
  6. Track it as a daily 15-minute habit.
