They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the new moons. Say, "They are measurements of time for the people and for Hajj." And it is not righteousness to enter houses from the back, but righteousness is [in] one who fears Allah. And enter houses from their doors. And fear Allah that you may succeed
Quran 2:189 · Surah Al-Baqara
Why the Hijri date matters
Many acts of worship follow the lunar calendar:
- The white days: the 13th, 14th and 15th of each month.
- Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and the six days of Shawwal.
- The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, the Day of Arafah and Eid al-Adha.
- Muharram, the Islamic New Year and Ashura.
The 12 Hijri months
